I’m So Tired

My first big lesson with words came while I was dating my first girlfriend when I was in high school. I can remember dreading those quiet times when we’d both run out of things to say. I’d silently wonder if she really ran out of things to say, or if perhaps she was beginning to have a change of heart. My mind would race. “Did I say something stupid? Doesn’t she like me anymore? Could this be the beginning of the end?” Being young, green, and in love, I didn’t know what to do, so I’d just blabber on about anything.

At the same time that I had this new girlfriend, my uncle from the United Kingdom was visiting, and he had a phrase he’d often say; it was like his personal mantra. He’d say, “I’m so tired. I’m so bloody exhausted.” Well, needing to fill up the silence and willing to talk about anything with my girlfriend, I began using my uncle’s words without even realizing it. In those silent moments I’d say, “Wow. I’m really tired today. I’m so tired. Are you tired? I’m just exhausted!” I can assure you, this is no way to foster young love, because they’re not just words. I actually “became” them and was always feeling exhausted!

Eventually my girlfriend asked, “Mike, why are you always so tired?” And I couldn’t answer her! I had completely forgotten that I started saying I was tired just to fill up the silence, and had then continued saying it because I was!

Even though I wasn’t using the phrase thoughts become things back then, I had already begun my journey into understanding the powers of thought and the mind. One day I wondered what would happen if I stopped saying I was so tired. Whoa! My sudden rejuvenation in the days that followed was shocking—almost scary! Scary because I began thinking about what might have happened had I not stopped declaring my exhaustion, or if I had begun saying other unhelpful things about myself that would have also become true!

I’ll bet you believe that you, too, could make yourself tired, just as I did, simply by saying that you feel exhausted, again and again, day in and day out. Right? But what if tomorrow morning you woke up feeling like a “million bucks,” like you were on top of the world, king or queen of your reality, bursting with enthusiasm and exuberance, aware that your thoughts became the things and events of your life? What if then, in spite of feeling so great, you said, “I’m tired. I’m so tired. I’m absolutely exhausted”? If you said it enough times, even though you weren’t telling the truth, would you still succeed in making yourself tired? Yes, no doubt about it.

Let’s make this even more challenging. Let’s pretend that you keep up this ruse and that you want to become tired, even though you’re not, but you’re not allowed to read any more self-improvement or metaphysical books to remind you of the power of your words in the world around you.
